about

We first went to Dunollie to run a free improvisation workshop, led by Raymond, and over the course of a very entertaining evening we thought, wouldn't it be great to record something here? Dunollie castle looks out over the entrance to Oban Bay, covered in ivy and dripping with history. We don't imagine the old clan cheifs would have expected GIO to turn up back in the day but the music and the atmosphere around Dunollie made for a magical combination.

A few months after Raymond's workshop, GIO made a trip to play concerts in the Corran Halls in Oban and in An Tobar arts centre in Tobermory. The personnel on this CD represents those musicians who were able to take up the invitation to get to Oban early in the day to record in the magnificent surroundings of Dunollie Castle.

All the music was improvised and reflects the musicians who were there, the environment of the castle and the people who bring it to life. Like every GIO recording, the line up here is unique. However, there are always a number of consistent elements that make up the GIO approach in whatever we do, and you can hear those elements here.

The group set up in the old dairy building in the castle grounds, and you can hear the sounds of some of the historic equipment. Later, as the beautiful spring day developed, we moved all the gear out on to the lawn and played the last piece in the open air.
